Alan stood 6’3” as a 17 year-old high school student. He shared a love for music and was an exceptional tenor. He sang in the Progressive Baptist Church choir and in several choirs at Rock Island High School. Alan was proud to have been accepted as a member of the Chamber Choir and he was awarded the prestigious Martin Luther King Award for music.
He and his best friend, Shane Duncan, passed away in a tragic automobile accident near their homes in Milan. Alan’s life was taken from him too early in life, but his giving spirit and musical talents were inspirations to others. He loved to volunteer and was very active in the Scott County Family Y. Alan also participated in Quad City Arts’ summer arts league project and worked with many of our area’s most talented students. He performed at his finest – signing and dancing – a real ham with a God-given gift to make anyone smile.
In his memory and in celebration of his life, a music scholarship was established. This scholarship is awarded to graduating students of Rock Island High School who plan to pursue a degree in music. It can also awarded to students living in the Bi-State area who are active in their respective church choir programs and plan to pursue a musical career. Alan’s parents, Alan Sr. and Martha Spears, are committing ongoing memorials for their son to the Rock Island Music Association. It was this parent group that decided to create a lasting memorial in the form of a music scholarship for Alan. It is a fitting tribute as Alan loved to help others and shared a genuine concern for them.
