American/Schleswig-Holstein Heritage Society

American/Schleswig-Holstein Heritage Society, ASHHS, was organized in Durant, Iowa for the purpose of promoting the heritage of the Schleswig-Holstein ancestry. ASHHS encourages and supports members in their efforts to learn more about their ancestry, the language and culture of the Schleswig-Holsteiners, and the history of their ancestors homeland. An organization fund established in the Community Foundation will ensure continued support for the American/Schleswig-Holstein Heritage Society. The American/Schleswig-Holstein Heritage Society and the ASHHS Endowment Fund Committee would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the estate and family of the late Marguerite K. Bartels and their executor Mr. Maurice Bennett for their generous gift to the ASHHS Endowment Fund. While Marguerite Bartels was never a member of ASHHS, she obviously had a great sense of pride in her Schleswig-Holstein heritage. Her grandfather emigrated from Schleswig-Holstein and her grandmother Mangels came from Westphalia. As a child, Marguerite lived on South Howell Street in Davenport, Iowa. She attended Buchanan School and later graduated from Central High School in 1934. After graduation she worked in the offices of the department store Peterson Harned Von Maur before moving to the Mel Foster Company where she served as personal secretary to Mel Foster, Jr. While Marguerite never owned or drove a car, she took great pride in her home and its furnishings, collecting many antiques during her lifetime. She never married and is survived by several nieces and nephews. Her bequest to ASHHS will be administered by the ASHHS Endowment Fund Committee thru the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend in Davenport, Iowa, as part of the ASHHS Endowment Fund. Grants from the Endowment Fund are available to support worthy projects designed to promote the preservation and recognition of our Schleswig-Holstein cultural and historical heritage.
