The Center for Belgian Culture Quad Cities:
Illinois / Iowa

The Center for Belgian Culture of Western Illinois, Inc. was organized on October 18, 1963 by Belgian Americans who wanted an organization to perpetuate the Belgian heritage in the area and to awaken people to knowing and enjoying the values of Belgian culture.

Over the years, the organization has served the community through a variety of activities, from formal dinners in the presence of Belgian diplomats and dignitaries to educational and cultural programs including folk dance, lace making, language classes, genealogy, participation in area cultural displays and activities.

The Center activities continue to include monthly waffle breakfast, publication of a monthly newsletter, genealogy classes, display of its cultural artifacts and participation in community events. The volunteer staff ensure visitors have an opportunity to view the extensive collection and provide assistance for various research projects, from a school paper to a genealogy research.

Funding is provided through proceeds for the monthly waffle breakfast, gift shop, dues and donations from visitors, members and community support. During 2003, the Board decided to establish the Center for Belgian Culture Endowment Fund in order to provide a vehicle for long term funding and explore the possibilities to expand its services.
