The mission of the Colonel Davenport Historical Foundation (CDHF) is to
preserve the Colonel Davenport House and site and to interpret the social
history and material culture of the early 19th century contained therein for
the benefit of the public.
The CDHF is an organization formed in 1978 to preserve the Colonel Davenport House on Arsenal Island and to the tell the story of the life of Colonel George Davenport and the development of the Quad Cities, mid-west regional and upper Mississippi River corridor through educational outreach programs and on site programs to the local community and Quad Cities school districts. As the oldest permanent residence in the Quad Cities, the historical Colonel Davenport House is a visible landmark to Illinois and Iowa resident and visitors and is a significant symbol of our local heritage.
Through a variety of programs, the CDHF serves up to 10,000 people annually, including local residents, students, and tourists. Visitors to the house receive interpretive tours by trained volunteer guides. Programs detailing the life and times of Colonel George Davenport are presented to many local civic organizations annually. The Lunch & Learn program series provides the public with local and regional historians speaking to an adult audience. The most recent feature to the house has been the opening of a special exhibit on the importance of the fur trade in the development of early local economy. The CDHF emphasizes youth education, providing local teachers with a variety of materials on local history specially developed for elementary and secondary students. A number of "Traveling Treasure Trunks" featuring the fur trade and pioneer artifacts are available for "hands-on" experience within the classroom.
