Clarence Gittings was born August 31, 1912 in Terre, Haute to Charles S. and Sarah (Moslander) Gittings. He spent most of his early life working on the farm and as an oil station attendant in Terre Haute . Anna Leone Knutstrom was born July 9, 1911 , in Biggsville , Illinois to Theodore and Margaret Kuntstrom. She obtained her education and spent most of her early life in the Stronghurst, Illinois area. Clarence and Leone married on January 18, 1934 , in Alexis, Illinois . Clarence attended Business College at Quincy , Illinois . He left there in 1936 to work at Sieg Co. Automotive Supplies in Burlington , Iowa . During World War II he served four years as an aviation machinist mate first class in Glenview , Illinois and in the Philippine Islands. Leone held a variety of positions while her husband was in the service including: JC Penny Co., Burlington , IA ; and Glidden Soya Co., Chicago .
After returning from service, Clarence was employed as a store manager at Sieg Co., Kewanee and Sterling , Illinois . In 1965, he was transferred to the home office in Davenport , IA , where he was an inventory manager until retirement in 1978. Both Leone and Clarence were members of many community organizations in their lifetime. Clarence was a member of the American Legion and Lions Club. He served on the board of the Methodist Church , Sterling . Later, he transferred his membership to Newcomb Presbyterian Church, Davenport . Leone was a member of the Newcomers Club and Lioness Club. She along with Clarence served on the board of the Methodist Church , Sterling and transferred her membership to Newcomb Presbyterian.
Clarence Gittings died Sunday, June 20 th , 1999 and Leone Gittings died Sunday, July 6 th , 2003 . |
