The son of John William Christian and Augusta Frisch Schacht,
Carl T.
Schacht was born on October 13, 1901 in Lubeck, Germany. In 1910 he
immigrated to the United States with his parents and four siblings. They
entered the U.S. via Ellis Island and settled in Durant Iowa. He was
educated in Stockelsdorf, near Ludbeck, Germany and in Durant. He also
completed an architectural drafting course at Chicago Technical Collage.
Ethel M. Baker Schacht was born and raised in Atalissa, Iowa, on
a farm
with her four siblings. After graduating from the teaching program at
the
University of Northern Iowa, Ethel taught fifth and sixth graders at the
Durant School from 1924-1929. On June 14, 1930 Carl T. Schacht was
married
to Ethel M. Baker in Council Bluffs Iowa.
Carl worked on farms in Cedar and Scott County before joining his
fathers
masonry business. He became owner and operator of the C. T. Schacht
Lumber
and Ready Mix in 1932. The Iowa Lumbermans Association presented Carl
the
master builder award.
Ethel and Carl built their home at 601 8th St. Durant, in 1930. There
they
raised their only child, a daughter, Sally Schacht Bell, who was born in
1935.
For over 50 years Mr. Schacht was a member of the Masonic Lodge
at Wilton
and Kaaba Shrine in Davenport Iowa. He served Durant as Mayor, was on
the
Durant board of education for 16 years, a member of the county board of
education and on the Durant cemetery board. He was also a member of the
Cedar County Republican Central committee and was active in the county
and
state Republican Party.
Ethel was active with Eastern Star, which is a charitable
organization, for
over fifty years. Ethel also enjoyed gardening, sewing, and traveling.
Along with his many other engagements Mr. Schacht was active with a
charitable organization called Masons and Shriners.
Mr. and Mrs. Schachts daughter, Sally Schacht Bell, has set up this
scholarship in memory of her parents.
