The Zabel family name has been around Eldridge since 1867, when William J.C. and Sophie (Drevs) Zabel arrived in Scott County from Germany. Wilma Zabel grew up on her family’s farm that was located four miles east of Eldridge, on 120 acres of rich Iowa farmland. The family was very close-knit and enjoyed the farming lifestyle. There were many things to do on a farm and Wilma stayed very active. She helped her mother with many household chores, such as canning and sewing. The days between Thanksgiving and New Years were filled with many festive events for Wilma and her three brothers.
Wilma received her formal education in a one-room school house, not far from her home. It was through 4-H Club and Farm Bureau that she expanded her knowledge of the community and of music. All of the Zabel children learned to play at least one musical instrument. Her brother Albert played the accordion; Elmer could play the violin, clarinet and saxophone; and Ray also played the clarinet and saxophone. Wilma was the family’s pianist.
Wilma remembers riding to Eldridge by horse and buggy. The first glimpse of the town was the view of the Depot and Turner Hall. She remained on the farm until the 1960s when she and her brother Ray moved to Davenport. They spent many days golfing, bowling and traveling. She has many fond memories of rural Scott County and its rich farmland.
Wilma has established a charitable remainder unitrust with the Community Foundation, which is designated as its beneficiary. This gift will provide a lifetime income to Wilma and after her lifetime, it will provide for an endowed fund at the Community Foundation. Wilma’s commitment to her community and her love of the Quad Cities will be carried on through her fund.
