Segal, Herman & Sarah Scholarship
The families of Judi and Donn Stroud and Randi and Gary Segal are pleased to establish this scholarship in honor of their parents, Herman Segal and the late Sarah Segal. The Herman and Sarah Segal Scholarship Fund is meant to further the education of Rock Island High School students. The Stroud and Segal families recognize the importance of a good education and want to give the young people of Rock Island an opportunity to enhance their education and make a positive impact on the community. The late Sarah Gurewitz Segal was a 1932 graduate of Rock Island High School and attended Northwestern University. She was the first President of Rock Island Little League Baseball (American League). She was a member of many charitable and religious organizations in the community. Sarah died at a rather early age in January 1960. Her caring for others was certainly a trademark of her short but meaningful life. Herman Segal graduated from South Philadelphia High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After serving as an officer in the United States Army in the Pacific theatre during World War II, the Segals settled in Rock Island where Herman established Herman's, Inc., a wholesale apparel company that is still in existence, serving retailers throughout the United States. Herman was a past board member of the Davenport YMCA, the Tri City Jewish Center, the Rock Island Hebrew Cemetery Association, and the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities. He is a current member of the Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club. The Segal and Stroud families have been involved in the Rock lsland School System for many years. Judi Stroud was educated in the Rock Island School System and graduated from Lindenwood College. Randi Segal graduated from Rock Island High School in 1961 and Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science in 1966. Randi Segal is a substitute teacher at Horace Mann Choice Elementary School and is on the Executive Board at the school. Both Stroud children, Scott and Allison, graduated from Rock Island High School in 1996 and 1998 respectively and both attended Indiana University. The Segal children, Sarah and Rachel are currently in the Rock Island School System. The Segal and Stroud families, while stressing education, have also been active in various civic and charitable organizations, to include Junior League Board, M.A. D. D., Quad Cities Botanical Center, Quad City Music Guild, Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities and the Quad City Symphony. Both families feel that the Segal Scholarship, given to deserving students, can only help make our community a better place to live. The Segals and Strouds are proud to honor Herman and Sarah Segal with this scholarship in their name so future generations of Rock Island young people will have a chance to better themselves and leave their own mark on our community.
