Mrs. Robert Heysinger

Shirley Heysinger was born on March 28, 1918 . She was the first child of Dr. and Mrs. John Voreck and lived just a block away from her present home on Forrest Road . When her more athletic, long-legged friends asked her to print their paper dolls she was thrilled. Shirley excelled at something, which became a lifelong joy and passion.

Shirley grew up in Davenport , IA enjoying the companionship of her Grandmother and Grandfather Warner and also her Grandfather Voreck who visited often. Shirley and her family often entertained with beautifully planned dinners at home for family, friends and relatives.

In high school was where she began her study of art and other subjects including chorus and French. Her focus was on art and she enjoyed her enthusiastic teachers very much. There was never a question in Shirley's mind that she would further her art education and career. Shirley studied her craft of art at the Art Institute in Chicago , IL and then went on to the Art Students League in New York . Her parents were instrumental in helping her look into schools in Chicago and helping her start at the American Academy of Art, where she spent three years studying her craft. After she married Robert in May 8, 1944 Shirley continued to study with professors from Iowa University .

After the Academy of Art Shirley worked at the Chicago Tribune creating advertising and fashion drawings. She also worked as a nurse's aid during World War II.

Shirley's late husband Robert was a major influence her charitable intent. Robert was the President of the Davenport Electric Company and worked in the community for many years. He gave his time, talent, and treasure to the YMCA, the City Planning Commission, and the United Fund.

Her community activities and hobbies include involvement in Artists Unlimited and Studio 15 and taking life-drawing classes at the Davenport Museum of Art. She volunteers her portraits and paintings to all private schools in the area and any worthy cause that needs an auction item. Shirley supports local charities like Vera French, WVIK, and the New Art Gallery . Shirley says, “ I'd like to give back to the community where I've lived all my life and love the area.”
