Dale & Marie Ziegler

Dale Ziegler was born in Moline, Ill. in 1948. He and his wife, Marie, were both raised there. His father worked at John Deere and his mother was a homemaker. He grew up with a brother and a sister, but his brother passed away when he was young. Dale attended Moline High School, and then went on to Bradley University. He graduated in 1966 and went on to work at John Deere, following in his father’s footsteps.

Marie’s father and mother both worked at John Deere. She loved growing up in Moline because she felt as if she knew everyone, and because her extended family was always close. She has two sisters and one brother. She earned her undergrad in accounting at St. Ambrose University, and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1978 with her Masters in business. Like Dale, Marie also followed in the footsteps of her parents, and went to work for John Deere right away.

Dale and Marie were married in 1979, and moved to Bettendorf in 1990. They have two children: Ana, who is a senior at the University of Iowa, and Catherine, who is a sophomore at Augustana.

Dale’s volunteer experience in the Quad-City community has included six years on the Bettendorf Library Foundation board, six years on the Playcrafters board, and involvement in the Band Parents Organization. Marie’s volunteer experience includes three years on the Community Foundation board, six years on the United Way board, six years on the Two Rivers YMCA board, six years on the Board of Visitors at Iowa Business College, two years on the Deere Company Credit Union board, Girl Scouts of the Mississippi Valley and being the treasurer of the Playcrafters board.

When their daughters were young, Dale and Marie were avid soccer parents and followed the girls’ games. Now that the girls are off at college, their dog is one of their main hobbies. Another way they enjoy spending their time is volunteering. One of their favorite fundraisers is Mrs. Claus’ Cupboard, put on by Playcrafters. This event involves making gift baskets and decorating trees to raise money. Marie says that when they volunteer, they always “get” more than they “give,” meet new people, make good friends, enrich the lives of others, and have experiences that supplement all areas of life.

The areas of philanthropy in which Dale and Marie are most interested include the arts, health and human services and children. They chose to achieve their charitable goals through the Community Foundation because they were encouraged to do so by Susan Skora, the current president of the Foundation. They also believe that the Foundation is an excellent way to reach out to the community because it is effective, easy and there is a broad outreach. Through all of their philanthropic and volunteer experiences, the Zieglers say they have come to enjoy being on numerous committees, and have developed a thorough community perspective.
